5 ways to look after cut flowers in the heat

Summer has well and truly hit Northamptonshire, with the temperature climbing and the sun shining! We often find in July and August there are mini heatwaves that send us crazy for a sweet treat from Gallone’s Ice Cream Parlour in Market Harborough to help us cool down, or a refreshing drink by the canal waterside after a day in the shop.

However during the hotter months – especially heatwaves – don't foregt about your blooms! Fresh cut flowers may need a little extra TLC to help them survive the high and changing temperatures. Magnolia the Florist share our tips for looking after your flowers in the heat, perfect for when you receive one of our beautiful bespoke bouquets!

5 ways to keep your flowers happy in the heat

1. Keep the flowers cool

The strong summer rays are just too much for delicate petals to handle! So to help avoid wilting, keep flowers out of direct sunlight and display them in a cool room at home. Definitely keep the flowers away from conservatories and sunny window sills!

2. Plenty of water

Flowers are thirsty things – especially in a heatwave! Check the water level in the vase daily, keep it regularly topped up with fresh water.

3. Avoid strong breeze

During hot months, us humans may love the blowing fan or breeze from the open patio doors but your flowers won’t. So display the flowers away from really draughty areas.

4. Spritz that mist

Flowers like Orchids and certain houseplants thrive in tropical heat, so love a good daily misting with water – especially when it is super hot. Have you seen our brand new Cactus Plant Mister from our Magnolia at Home range? This fab little gadget will help you look stylish whilst keeping yout plants cool!

5. A good trim

We recommend every couple of days to carefully snip another centremetre off the bottom of the stems. This helps aid the water absorption, so those flowers can drink up more water.
